Amorphophallus plants and species
Amorphophallus are a large genus (over 150) from the arum family. The best known being the giant A.titanium can reach around 2.5m when in flower and is originally from Borneo. It does require warm tropical conditions to grow and flower so in the UK this is strictly a Greenhouse or Conservatory plant, if you have the space.
Although some species of Amomorphallus have a tendancy to 'smell' a little when first flowering, they are spectacular
The smaller A. Konjac with its large deep red flowers spotted stem and large leaves is a lot easier, still requiring warmth but not as much space. This species lends itself to container growing in the UK, where it can be overwintered on a warm patio until the summer sun eventually warms up.
Varieties
- Amorphophallus titanium, the largest flowering plant in the world, also known as the 'corpse lily', referring to the smell when in flower.
- Amorphophallus konjac is much smaller but is probably the most widely grown.
- Amorphophallus prainii has creamy flowers.
