Scabiosa
Often referred to as pincushion flowers scabiosa are a butterfly attracting long flowering perennial or annual plant that grows well in a humus rich soil in full sun.
Scabiosa make a great bedding plant and with lots of cultivars available for sale online they are easy to buy.
Scabiosa incisa with its deeply incised leaves is appropriately named.
Scabiosa are said to have medicinal properties, however they are mainly used as garden plants.
Scabiosa species include :
- Scabiosa columbaria is a perennial species with nice mauve to purple flowers. (see picture right)
- S.atropurpurea is an annual species that can be grown from seed.
Scabiosa cultivars include
- Scabiosa caucasica 'Blue Perfection' a tall growing plant with blue flowers.
- Scabiosa atropurpurea ' Beaujolais Bonnets' with classic deep burgandy flowers are a great addition to the garden border.
- Scabiosa caucasica Goldingensis is another worth looking for.
