Callistemon

Callistemon plants or 'Bottlebrush' are a native of Australia and they have been successfully grown in the UK for many years.

Cold hardy varieties include Callistemon viridiflorus, Callistemon citrinus, Callistemon subulatus and Callistemon pallidus, however with proper protection many other Callistemon deserve a place in the garden.

Callistemon make an excellent garden plant in the UK when given some protection. Look out for the hardy species ranging from 1/2m to 4m.

Drought tolerant with flowers that attract birds, commonly known as "bottlebrushes" due to the shape of the flowers from late spring through to summer. A wide range of colours from white through to mauve and purple, including green flowering forms.

Care

A sunny position with a well mulched, well drained soil is suitable, they will tolerate poor soil just about any condition except for shade. Keep watered when establishing. Prune each year just below the old flowers to keep in shape. Remember to use a low phosphate fertilizer
