Walnut Trees
Grown for both the nuts and the timber Walnut trees or Juglans regia, prefer a position in full sun and a humus rich deep soil. A deciduous tree with lots of different cultivars are available for sale, some are more compact then others Broadview being one, however no real dwarf varieties are available. Juglans nigra is the 'Black Walnut'
Fast growing and reaching a height of 30m, Walnut Trees will flower and then fruit in summer. The flowers are nothing special, however these trees do make an excellent shade tree and make a nice specimen. They are best grown in a position that is as protected from frosts as is possible.
Walnut Tree Care
A deep fertile soil is essential as is good drainage. Walnut trees do not like frosts and they do not like water logged soils. Some of the newer hybrid varieties are more tolerant of dry conditions, however moisture is essential.
- As with all trees site preparation is essential before planting. Soil may need to be adjusted to obtain a ph of around 6.
- As these are a fairly large tree plant out on an 8 - 9 m grid for fruit, 5 - 6 for timber production.
- After planting water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser which will stimulate root growth, stake to maintain an upright habit.
- Mulch to help control weeds and maintain a cool moist root run.
- Little care once established, with pruning of any damaged or diseased wood about all that is needed.
