Ophrys Orchids
Ophrys Orchids are a large group of terrestrial orchids or 'ground orchids' found from Britain, France, Spain and Germany to the Mediterranean through to Northern Africa. Ophrys insectifera is sometimes referred to as the 'fly orchid'.
Ophrys Orchid Varieties
Some species are popular in the UK including :
- Ophrys apifera, commonly called the bee orchid, the flowers looking like a bee. Flowering in summer with large mauve to pink outer sepals and a furry lip that looks like a bee.
- Ophrys sphegodes is also known as the spider orchid, early flowering, the outer sepals are a creamy white, the lip is a crimsom red.
- Ophrys insectifera with its pale yellow to green outer sepals and deep red to maroon lip is known as the Fly Orchid. One of the best for cold climates.
Ophrys Orchids Care
These are a winter flowering Orchid from the Mediterranean through Europe, summer dormant although dormancy is reasonably short. In the UK some species of these these wonderful orchids will need to be grown indoors or in a greenhouse, others will survive in the open. Frosts and extreme cold of winter, prevent outdoor cultivation, a dry dormancy is also required.
