Syringa - Lilac Trees
One of the most fragrant of all plants lilacs flower from mid spring to early summer and grow well in many areas of the UK.
The traditional lilac is a ' lilac' colour, however they do come in white, mauve and purple to blue forms as well.
Lilacs will reach around 2 - 3m in height and need a little space to so that they can 'show off' when in flower.
Most modern cultivars are grafted , so make sure that any growth below the graft is removed.
Although commonly grown as a bush, lilacs can also be grown as standards, and make a wonderful feature when grown in this manner. These plants are 'top grafted' so plants will require support as the weight of the head will increase over time. Many nurseries offer a range of species and cultivars for sale in the UK
