Philadelphus or ' Mock Orange' are available from retail nurseries or for sale online in the UK. The large flowered Philadelphus Beauclerk is one of our favourites. Philadelphus lewisii or Lewis's Mock-orange is a deciduous species. Philadelphus Karwinskianusis an Evergreen Mock Orange as is Philadelphus mexicana when grown in warmer climates.
Philadelphus varieties
- Philadelphus mexicanus
Large shrub to 8ft (2.4m) taller growing in warmer climates. Better suited to warmer climates or a sheltered position in cooler areas. Fragrant white to cream flowers.
- Philadelphus x purpureomaculatus 'Belle Etoile'
This is a lovely compact deciduous shrub that will reach around 6ft (2m). The fragrant large white flowers in spring are white with a maroon 'blotch' in the centre. Grows well in part shade to full sun, protection from hot afternoon sun is best. Well suited to growing in the garden border, as an informal hedge or in a woodland situation.
- Philadelphus coronarius - 'Aureus' or 'Golden Mock Orange'. Lovely golden green foliage and attractive white flowers, frost hardy, but does not like hot sunny positions or really cold windy positions. Prune flower stems once flowering is over. Older canes can be cut right back as required to promote new growth. See details
- Philadelphus x virginalis 'Manteau d' Hermine'
A smaller growing deciduous shrub to 6ft (1.6m). Double white flowers cover the graceful arching stems in spring, very showy when in full flower.
