Pitcher Plants
Pitcher Plants include Nepenthes and Sarracenia species and are carnivorous plants that get nutrients from trapping small insects.
Although fascinating for the insect trapping capabilities many of the Pitcher plant are also very interesting plants, large colourful pitchers and many interesting shapes.
Excellent plants for introducing children to the world of plants and also great talking points. It is the large lidded pitcher shaped trap that gives these plants the name.
Pitcher Plant Care
Contrary to popular belief most species are fairly easy to grow indoors.
Basic growing conditions include a damp growing medium that is fairly nutrient free. A warm position and good strong full or slightly filtered light.
In the UK a South facing window seems to be the easiest although hothouses and other environments will work wonders.
The plants will feed themselves, if you must use small live insects.
