L.angustifolia 'Hidcote' and L. x imtermedia 'Grosso' are two of the most popular varieties, however retailers should look at some of the newer introductions, particularly those with brilliant colored flowers.

Plants grown outdoors in the UK are more hardy and with improvements in hybridisation show better disease resistance than many imported varieties.

Some varieties, although grown in the UK are not frost resistant and are best grown as patio plants. Your local garden centre should be able to provide adequate advice on suitability.

Lavender Suitability

Lavender falls into four main catagories in terms of hardiness.

• Hardy Lavender
  These varieties include L.angustifolia, L x intermedia. L x chaytorae
• Frost Hardy Lavender
  These varieties include L. pedunculata and many L.stoechas
  
• Half Hardy Lavender
  Most L.dentata varieties are regarded as 'Half Hardy'
• Tender Lavender
  Usually with more delicate flowers this group is best grown in pots in all areas of the UK and over wintered in a protected position. L. pinnata buchii (Tenerife Lavender), L. canariensis (Canary Island Lavender), L.pinnata (Fernleaf Lavender), L. rotundifolia (Cape Verde Lavender)
