Here we are looking at the Ornamental Grape varieties that wholesale growers offer on the UK. Grown for the foliage, and although the autumn colour can be outstanding, the attractive green through spring and summer add a lush green look to landscaping projects.

Used on trellises, fences and allowed to scramble through trees, ornamental grape vine have a lot to offer landscape designers. For sheer colour look for Vitus coignetiae, however for colour plus grapes look for 'Brant'.

Vitus varieties for the UK

• Vitus coignetiae - Also known as the 'Crimson Glory Vine' for its brilliant red autumn colour, this is an outstanding foliage plant, large green heart shaped leaves with a slightly serrated edge are attractive from spring through summer. It is vigorous, its flowers are small and the fruit are small are bitter, however in autumn it puts on a 'Big Show'.
• Vitus vinifera - Green foliage, this is a wine grape, however in the UK, grown for its foliage except for a few 'pioneer' vineyards.
• Vitus vinifera purpurea - Excellent purple foliage in autumn.
